Circle's Stablecoin Empire Faces Headwinds Despite Record Growth
Circle's Q1 earnings report was a mixed bag, with revenue beating expectations but net income from continuing operations falling short. The company reported $694 million in total revenue and reserve income for the quarter, a 20% year-over-year increase. However, this fell short of analyst estimates by $21 million.
The decline in net income from continuing operations was attributed to the interest rate environment, which has squeezed Circle's reserve income. The company earns money by holding US Treasuries and other safe assets backing its stablecoin, USDC. Despite this setback, Circle's adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.21, beating analyst expectations of $0.18.
USDC circulation reached a record high of $77 billion in Q1, up 28% from the same period last year. Onchain transaction volume also surged, with Circle processing $21.5 trillion worth of transactions, a 263% increase year-over-year.
