Citi to Hold Bitcoin Directly for Clients by End of 2026
Citi has confirmed it will begin holding Bitcoin directly for clients by the end of 2026 through its new Custody+ platform. This move marks a significant shift in the banking industry, as Citi is one of the largest custodian banks in the world, with over $24 trillion in assets under custody and administration.
Custody+, launched on August 18, 2026, includes digital asset custody as one of its key features. Bitcoin will be the first asset to be held by Citi's clients through this platform, allowing them to access traditional and crypto custody within a single framework.
Amit Agarwal, Head of Custody at Citi Investor Services, described Custody+ as the result of a multi-year infrastructure build. Chris Cox, Head of Investor Services, noted that Citi invests over $2 billion annually in its platform strategy.
