Citibank has taken a significant step in its digital asset expansion by hiring a Director-level professional to lead its efforts in London. The bank posted an ad for the role of 'Digital Assets Client Solutions, Director, Investor Division' on July 31, seeking candidates with over 10 years of institutional finance experience and at least 8 years of people management under their belt.

The new hire will sit at the intersection of Citi's traditional institutional services and its blockchain ambitions. The role focuses on three key areas: crypto custody, tokenized cash and assets, and digital collateral management. This Director will be responsible for commercialization and delivery, meaning they won't just create strategy decks but also sell solutions to institutional investors and ensure those solutions work in practice.

The London hire is part of Citi's broader internal frameworks known as 'One Platform' and 'One Wallet,' which aim to create a unified infrastructure layer for institutional digital asset services. The bank has been working on its 2026 roadmap, which includes launching a crypto custody solution alongside exploring tokenized deposits and stablecoin issuance.

Citibank's entry into the digital asset space is not new, as it began building out its team in 2021. Since then, the landscape has shifted considerably, with the bank moving from planning phases to execution. Tokenization allows traditional financial instruments to be represented on a blockchain, improving settlement speed and capital efficiency.

The UK's regulatory environment has been increasingly accommodating of digital asset services, making London an attractive hub for institutional finance. By placing this role in London, Citi gains proximity to European institutional clients and the supportive regulatory framework.
