Citigroup to Launch Tokenized Deposit Service for Japanese Companies
Citigroup plans to launch a tokenized deposit service for Japanese companies in 2026, allowing them to send international payments at any time, including nights and weekends.
The service will utilize Citigroup's existing tokenization platform, Citi Token Services, which uses permissioned blockchain technology to enable real-time cross-border transactions between participating banks.
According to a report by the Nikkei newspaper, the service will be available to Japanese companies in the coming year and will be the first of its kind offered by an international bank to Japanese clients.
Citigroup's Global Head of Service, Shahmir Khaliq, confirmed the plans during an interview with the newspaper, stating that the service will allow companies to send payments at any time without the need for prior arrangements or risk management.
