CJ Ujah Denies Allegations of Crypto Scam Involvement
Former Olympic sprinter CJ Ujah has been accused of being part of an organized crime group linked to a cryptocurrency scam. The athlete, whose name appeared in court as Chijindu Ujah, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to defraud at Chelmsford Crown Court.
The alleged scam involved phone calls from individuals claiming to be police officers and crypto-currency companies, tricking victims into sharing security details before stealing funds stored in their wallets. One victim reportedly lost over £300,000 ($400,000).
Ujah, 32, is a British sprinter who became only the fifth Briton to break the 10-second barrier for the 100 meters in 2014. He won gold at the 2017 world championships and was cleared of intentionally taking banned substances after testing positive at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The next hearing will be held on September 9, with a 12-week trial set to begin on May 24, 2027.
