CLARITY Act Delay Hits Crypto Markets Amid Regulatory Uncertainty
The CLARITY Act is a proposed bill aiming to reduce regulatory overlap between the SEC and CFTC. It seeks to categorize certain digital assets as commodities rather than securities, giving exchanges, token issuers, and institutional investors clearer rules.
This could make it easier for crypto businesses to launch products, list assets, and attract institutional capital without constant regulatory uncertainty.
However, large banks are pushing back against the bill, arguing that it could weaken the SEC's authority over high-risk digital assets. They also worry about competition from crypto firms gaining access to payment networks, custody, trading, and tokenized financial products under a lighter framework.
The Senate's delay of the vote until September has left investors waiting for clarity on US crypto regulation. A successful bill could improve sentiment towards US crypto businesses and strengthen institutional adoption, but another delay or weakening support could hurt sentiment.
