CLARITY Act Hits Roadblock Over Stablecoin Yield Concerns
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act), a comprehensive piece of crypto legislation, has hit a roadblock in the Senate. The main obstacle is stablecoin yield, which traditional banks view as an existential threat to their deposit base.
Senate Republicans are concerned that if stablecoin issuers can offer yield to holders, it will siphon deposits out of banks and into stablecoin platforms. This concern was sparked by companies like PayPal offering yields on digital assets.
The CLARITY Act aims to provide a clearer regulatory framework for the US digital asset market, covering token classification, DeFi oversight, and enforcement tools. However, the bill needs 60 votes for cloture on the Senate floor, making it difficult to pass before the August recess.
