CLARITY Act Stalled: Crypto Industry's Legislative Hopes Hang in Balance
The U.S. cryptocurrency sector is facing uncertainty as the Senate returns to Washington with a narrow window to pass the CLARITY Act, a bill backed by the industry.
The CLARITY Act aims to provide a framework for digital asset regulation and has gained support from some Democrats. However, if it fails to clear a key procedural vote this week, its path could slip into the next Congress in 2027, where election results may reshape support for crypto legislation.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has scheduled a cloture vote on the CLARITY Act for Tuesday, requiring support from some Democrats to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to overcome a filibuster.
The Senate has fewer than 36 business days left before a new Congress is sworn in in 2027. Senator Cynthia Lummis, one of the bill's strongest supporters, said that the next real chance for passage might not come until 2030 if lawmakers fail to send it to the president.
