CLARITY Act Talks Continue as Lummis Works to Find Common Ground with Democrats
Senator Cynthia Lummis says negotiations for the CLARITY Act continue daily as she works to find common ground with Democrats. The bill, which aims to provide a clear regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market, has been in discussion for nearly 11 months.
Lummis stated that Senate Majority Leader John Thune has reserved time for the bill on the Senate agenda for several weeks, indicating that lawmakers are still committed to moving forward with the legislation despite ongoing negotiations.
The CLARITY Act would establish the regulatory boundary between digital commodities and securities, create registration requirements for exchanges, brokers, and token issuers, and assign the CFTC authority over crypto spot markets on regulated platforms. Supporters argue that statutory legislation would provide a lasting regulatory framework beyond agency rulemaking.
Several Democrats continue to seek changes involving ethics rules, illicit finance measures, and stablecoin yield provisions before supporting the legislation. This has slowed efforts to schedule a final vote, but Lummis remains optimistic about the bill's chances.
