CLARITY Act Under Fire: Law Enforcement Officials Warn of Weakened Financial Tools

The CLARITY Act aims to create a framework for digital assets in the US, but its current form has raised concerns among law enforcement officials. Thomas Loving, a veteran Kentucky law enforcement officer and director of the Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force, argues that the bill would weaken the financial tools used to track and stop illicit finance.

Loving points out that North Korea stole over $2 billion in crypto assets in 2025, mostly to fund its weapons program. Iran has also been using crypto to evade sanctions, fund terrorist proxies, and move money outside of US authorities' reach. The U.S. Treasury Department recently sanctioned Nobitex, Iran's largest digital asset exchange, for facilitating payments tied to these activities.

Loving emphasizes that drug cartels rely heavily on crypto for financing, using it to hide their identities, launder profits, and move funds quickly in and out of the US while evading law enforcement. Without proper safeguards, foreign adversaries will continue to target the country's global standing and scam investors.

A strong market structure bill would promote innovation while preserving the tools needed to stop criminal activity, protect investors, and defend US interests. Loving urges Congress to reject the CLARITY Act in its current form and instead pass a bill that promotes trust, transparency, accountability, and national security.
