CLARITY Act Vote Looms as Crypto Industry Awaits Regulatory Clarity
The fate of the CLARITY Act hangs in the balance as it heads to a crucial Senate vote on September 15. The bill, which aims to provide regulatory clarity for cryptocurrencies, has been met with mixed signals from Washington. Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor, claims that multiple members of Congress and staff have told him directly in DC that 'Clarity is dead.'
However, Faryar Shirzad, Coinbase's Chief Policy Officer, remains optimistic, saying he feels 'pretty good' about the bill's chances due to bipartisan momentum. Kristin Smith from the Solana Policy Institute also believes the push for a September vote is still on track, with most police associations now neutral or supportive.
The CLARITY Act would give the CFTC direct regulatory power over Bitcoin trading platforms, create a formal pathway for Ethereum fundraising under the SEC, and offer a defined route out of securities classification for XRP. If it passes, this could trigger a major rally on the Bitcoin chart, with altcoins likely to follow.
However, if the bill fails, existing law, courts, and individual states would continue enforcing rules as they do today, maintaining regulatory uncertainty that keeps pushing innovation and capital offshore.
