CLARITY Act Vote Looms Large as Senate Deadline Approaches
The CLARITY Act is stuck in the Senate due to its inability to gather enough votes, despite being just days away from August recess. The bill's proponents believe that it still has a chance of passing, with key senators pushing for a floor vote within the next couple of weeks.
A running tally among crypto policy watchers puts 'confirmed or likely' yes votes at around 51, with Republican support looking solid but Democratic votes remaining uncertain. Several Democrats who initially backed the bill have since cooled on it, citing concerns over ethics rules, consumer protection, and illicit finance safeguards.
Senator Cynthia Lummis continues to champion the bill, stating that it would provide 'a clear path forward' for digital assets by defining 'ancillary assets.' This would help bring an end to the regulation-by-enforcement era, which has driven innovation offshore.
The XRP community is closely monitoring the developments, as they believe clearer federal guardrails could accelerate institutional activity around custody, settlement, and tokenized assets. However, if the bill stalls, the market may be left with patchwork oversight that has kept institutions on the sidelines.
