Clarity Act's Fate Hangs in Balance as Senate Approaches Crucial Vote
The Senate is set to hold a cloture vote on the Clarity Act on September 15, which will determine whether the bill has enough bipartisan support to move forward.
If the bill passes cloture with at least 60 votes, it will proceed to a floor vote by the full chamber. However, if it fails to meet this threshold, its chances of passing before the end of the year are slim.
The Clarity Act aims to provide regulatory clarity for digital assets, classifying them and defining regulatory jurisdiction over them. It also treats crypto exchanges and brokers as financial institutions under the Bank Secrecy Act, requiring them to adhere to anti-money laundering programs and customer due diligence checks.
Crypto markets have reacted cautiously to the upcoming vote, with Bitcoin prices sitting around $78,000. Industry leaders are unfazed about a possible negative outcome, citing the readiness of federal agencies to pen guidelines addressing gaps in digital assets regulation.
