Cleanspark Secures Exclusive Rate Increase from Jellico Utilities
Cleanspark is the only bitcoin mining operation that will receive a rate increase from Jellico Utilities this year, pending TVA approval. According to Joe Carroll, President and CEO of Jellico Utilities Authority, the rate increase will help pay for the expansion of the substation, which costs $1.5 million to $2.5 million.
Carroll explained that Cleanspark pulls three times the kilowatt hours than the entire system, making it fair for them to receive the rate increase this year. The previous year, Cleanspark was the only one that didn't receive an increase, while MSV rate class did not receive a rate increase and residential customers received a rate increase.
The Ratepayer Protection Pledge, signed by President Trump in 2026, requires data centers to pay 100% of all costs to avoid passing them on to the ratepayer. However, Jellico Utilities Authority has been charging Cleanspark 100% of their costs since they first arrived.
Carroll emphasized that the rate increase will not affect residential customers and that Jellico Utilities Authority is making more money due to its stronger margins. He also clarified a rumor about a potential bitcoin operation at Oswego, stating that it's not possible due to voltage drop issues.
