CME-Coinbase Derivatives Gap Reaches Alarming Levels
The Bitcoin derivatives gap between CME and Coinbase is causing concern among market observers. According to recent data, leveraged funds held a net short position of 41,252 BTC-equivalent across CME Bitcoin futures, while being net long just 151 BTC on Coinbase's nano Bitcoin perpetual-style contract.
On August 25, the open interest in CME products was 118,267 BTC-equivalent, dwarfing the 2,322 BTC in Coinbase. This significant disparity has raised concerns about a potential position shakeout when the next forced unwind occurs.
The scale of the CME position is staggering, with leveraged funds being net short 8,114 standard contracts or 40,570 BTC and 6,821 micro contracts or 682.1 BTC. In contrast, Coinbase's net long position was just 151 BTC, a small fraction of the overall exposure.
Market observers are cautioning that without matched CME basis and Coinbase funding data, it is difficult to determine whether the CME shorts are directional positions or cash-and-carry trades. The situation remains fluid, and market participants will need to wait for further developments before making any decisions.
