CME Group CEO Warns of Manipulation in Prediction Markets
CME Group CEO Terry Duffy recently expressed concerns about prediction markets during a meeting of the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee. He warned that these markets are vulnerable to manipulation and could undermine the US government's plans to turn the country into the 'crypto capital of the world'.
Duffy pointed out that since the current administration took power in January 2025, over 2,500 self-certifications have been filed, but none have been challenged. Many of these contracts may be susceptible to manipulation, violating Core Principle 3.
The CME Group CEO also referenced two specific examples: the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and a story involving US President Donald Trump's teleprompter. He stated that allowing the listing of such products on US markets would 'effectively achieve the exact opposite' of what the government is trying to accomplish.
During the meeting, Duffy engaged in a heated exchange with CFTC Chair Mike Selig and Kalshi co-founder Luana Lopez Lara. He claimed that his regulatory division has more people than Kalshi's entire company and suggested they 'look into reliable markets'.
