CME Group Debuts FCA-Regulated Multi-Asset Crypto Indices for Institutional Investors
CME Group has launched two new multi-asset crypto indices that provide a broader view of the digital asset market. The CME CF Crypto Market Index and the CME CF Emerging Crypto Index were introduced on August 31, 2026, after a week-long testing period. These indices are designed to give institutional investors a clearer understanding of the crypto market beyond just tracking Bitcoin or Ether.
The CME CF Crypto Market Index tracks Bitcoin and Ether weighted by free-float market capitalization, while the Emerging Crypto Index excludes these two assets to focus on other digital assets. Both indices update approximately every second and operate continuously every day of the year. Daily settlement rates are published at three separate regional windows covering London, New York, and Asia-Pacific.
The launch reflects a longer buildout by CME Group and CF Benchmarks, which started with Bitcoin reference rates and expanded into single-asset benchmarks for coins like XRP and ICP. The distinction between these new indices and existing single-asset reference rates is that they are designed as tracking tools for performance measurement and risk management, rather than settling derivatives contracts.
The administration of the indices by CF Benchmarks under FCA regulation provides a compliance backbone that institutional allocators typically require before adopting a new pricing standard. This regulatory layer matters for asset managers, pension funds, or ETF issuers to justify using an index as a basis for real products.
