CME Group Sees Record $207B in Gross Notional Open Interest Amid Institutional Appetite Surge
CME Group reported a record-breaking $207 billion in gross notional open interest for August, marking a 20% increase from the same period last year. This significant jump reflects the growing appetite of institutional investors in CME-listed products.
The interest rate complex was the standout performer, with US Treasury futures and options averaging 11.8 million contracts per day, a 15% year-over-year increase. Several individual products set their own records, including Ultra US Treasury Bond futures, which averaged 791,000 contracts per day.
Crypto contracts also maintained respectable numbers, averaging 175,000 per day in August and translating to around $7.9 billion to $12 billion in notional value. CME's subsidiary BrokerTec reported a notable increase in European repo activity, jumping 27% compared to the prior year.
