Cobb County Investor Loses Hundreds of Thousands to Fake Crypto Platform
A Cobb County investor lost hundreds of thousands of dollars to a fake crypto platform that was convincing enough to make them withdraw a small amount, giving them confidence to continue depositing.
The scammer used social media to contact the victim, posing as a mutual acquaintance and steering the conversation towards a lucrative crypto trade. The platform initially allowed for small withdrawals, but after the victim had sunk hundreds of thousands of dollars, it reported that everything was gone, with the perpetrator claiming the investment had disappeared.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) traced much of the victim's funds to a cryptocurrency exchange and secured a court order forcing the exchange to return the assets. The nonprofit Operation Shamrock assisted in the case, which is an example of 'pig butchering,' a scam tactic that involves spending weeks winning a target's trust before pulling in more money.
