Codeberg Bans AI-Generated Code and Cryptocurrency Projects
Codeberg has announced a new policy to ban projects whose code is largely or fully machine-generated through LLMs and other 'AI' tools. This move follows a similar ban on cryptocurrency-related projects. The decision was made after two community-led motions passed, one of which prohibited scraping project code for use in LLMs and another that disallowed substantially generated code.
The second motion, which had 358 votes in favor versus 144 against, cited concerns over the externalization of hardware costs due to expanding 'AI' datacenter hyperscaling. This has led to significantly increased costs for Codeberg over the past years. The community also expressed worries that LLM-based tools are destroying the OSS (open-source software) community and its users' cognitive abilities.
Codeberg's Terms of Use have been updated to reflect these changes, which now include a ban on both cryptocurrency projects and code generated by LLMs like Claude and OpenAI Codex.
