Coinbase Aims for Everything Exchange Status with Broadened Trading Offerings
Coinbase Global is pushing beyond cryptocurrency trading, expanding its offerings to become an 'everything exchange' platform. The company's President and COO Emilie Choi and CFO Alesia Haas outlined a strategy that includes diversifying beyond spot crypto trading, adding new trading products, scaling stablecoin and tokenization offerings, and building infrastructure for on-chain transactions.
Coinbase now generates less than 10% of its revenue from Bitcoin spot trading, down from over 50% at the time of its public listing in 2021. Subscription and services revenue has increased to around $2.5 billion annually, driven in part by stablecoin activity.
The company's 'Everything Exchange' goal is to create a single platform where customers can trade any asset, anytime. Coinbase began with crypto spot trading but has since added derivatives, prediction markets, and traditional equities. The company's derivatives business reached an all-time high in market-share terms during the second quarter.
Coinbase's prediction-markets product has achieved a $100 million annualized revenue run rate and is one of its fastest-growing revenue products. The company plans to expand the range of available prediction-market contracts and continue improving the six-month-old product.
