Coinbase and Better Mortgage Launch Bitcoin-Backed Home Loans
Coinbase and Better Mortgage have launched Bitcoin-backed home loans in the US, allowing qualified borrowers to secure down payments without selling their cryptocurrency.
The product combines a Fannie Mae-backed mortgage with a separate Bitcoin-secured loan. Borrowers must pledge at least 250% of the loan down payment in BTC, currently valued at $250,000 or more for a $100,000 down payment.
Borrowers retain exposure to potential gains but also risk liquidation if they fall behind on payments. Better can sell the pledged Bitcoin after 60 days of non-payment.
Coinbase One members can receive up to $10,000 as a rebate against closing costs for eligible borrowers, capped at 1% of the mortgage value.
