Coinbase and Tech Giants Back Open-Weight AI Models Amid US Leadership Push
Crypto exchange Coinbase has expressed support for open-weight artificial intelligence models, echoing the sentiments of NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang's recent post on X. In his first-ever tweet, Huang emphasized the importance of open-weight models in expanding access to AI and maintaining U.S. technological leadership.
NVIDIA's letter, signed by several major technology companies including Meta, Microsoft, and IBM, argued that open-weight models are critical for competition and innovation. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong responded positively, stating that his company is already moving towards using such systems.
Armstrong suggested that open-weight models may outperform closed frontier models in certain enterprise use cases, citing the example of an internal compliance model trained on 100,000 cases being more effective than a general-purpose frontier model. Several prominent figures from the tech and crypto communities have expressed support for Huang's initiative, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Jack Dorsey.
