Coinbase and W.R. Berkley Shine Amid S&P 500 Laggards
The S&P 500 index is home to some of the largest and most well-known companies in the market, but not all large-cap stocks are created equal. Some struggle with slowing growth, declining margins, or increased competition.
Two S&P 500 stocks that stand out as having exciting potential are Coinbase (COIN) and W.R. Berkley (WRB).
Coinbase is a blockchain infrastructure company that offers trading, staking, stablecoin, and other payment solutions, boasting a best-in-class gross margin of 85.7%. The company's disciplined cost controls and effective management have resulted in a strong two-year EBITDA margin of 38.1%, making it a free cash flow machine with the flexibility to invest in growth initiatives or return capital to shareholders.
W.R. Berkley is an insurance company that has shown steady annualized growth in net premiums earned over the last five years, with 11.3% growth. The company's industry-leading 20% return on equity demonstrates management's skill in finding high-return investments and a book value per share outlook for the upcoming 12 months calls for 24.4% growth.
On the other hand, Ball (BALL) is a large-cap stock that we question. While it has a long history dating back to 1880, its scale limits its growth potential compared to smaller competitors. The company's gross margin of 21.1% is below its competitors, and its low free cash flow margin of 0.1% gives it little breathing room to invest in areas like marketing and R&D.
