Coinbase Backs Open-Weight AI, Citing Stronger Performance in Corporate Settings

Share

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has publicly endorsed open-weight artificial intelligence models, stating that they can deliver stronger performance than closed frontier models for internal corporate work.

The discussion began with a public letter posted by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on X (formerly Twitter), which argued that open-weight models are important for broadening access to AI, spurring competition, and maintaining U.S. technological leadership.

Armstrong responded to Huang's post, saying that Coinbase also supports strong American open-weight models and is already moving more of its work to such a system.

In particular, Armstrong cited the use case of fine-tuning models trained on internal data for specific tasks, such as compliance. He argued that these models can become better experts for those tasks than general-purpose closed models.
