Coinbase Blocks Celo's Layer 2 Upgrade: Crypto Community Divided
Crypto community divided over Coinbase's refusal to support Celo's transition from a Layer 1 blockchain to a Layer 2 solution on Ethereum. The decision has sparked intense discussion among market observers, with some questioning the potential repercussions for Ethereum's scaling ecosystem.
As part of the upgrade, Celo is set to migrate its funds to a new network, ceasing block production on the current L1 network and making assets inaccessible on Coinbase after January 13, 2025. While users can transfer their tokens to CELO-compatible wallets, the lack of support from Coinbase has attracted criticism.
Celo co-founder Marek Olszewski expressed disappointment over Coinbase's decision, suggesting it disrupts the broader Ethereum vision for leveraging Layer-2 solutions. He questioned whether other EVM-compatible L1 networks might reconsider similar transitions due to resistance from influential exchanges.
