Coinbase Brings Micropayments to Slack with Instant x402 Settlement
Coinbase has launched an innovative feature that allows users to make micropayments for services within Slack, without requiring subscriptions or manual approvals. The new tool is built on Coinbase's Developer Platform and uses the x402 protocol, a payment standard developed by Coinbase, to settle transactions in approximately 200 milliseconds.
The feature was demonstrated internally on August 18, 2026, and allows users to type a question into Slack, tag the bot, and receive an answer that may involve paying for a service behind the scenes. The bot searches a marketplace called the x402 Bazaar, which lists over 10,000 payable services, picks the relevant one, and completes payment on its own.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted the importance of this innovation in speeding up communication and access to information. He noted that removing payment friction makes it more efficient for users and AI agents to get answers, which is a key business goal for Coinbase.
