Coinbase Brings Regulated Crypto Futures Trading to Canada
Coinbase has launched regulated crypto derivatives trading for eligible Canadian clients through its subsidiary Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM). The rollout includes perpetual and dated futures contracts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets with leverage up to 10x. Introductory fees start at 0.02% per trade plus $0.11 per contract.
The product suite offers both perpetual contracts with no expiration date and dated futures that settle on a fixed date. The company is operating under a Canadian international exemption facilitated by the country's securities regulators. CFM has its sights set on securing CIRO dealer status by early 2027, which would give it a more permanent regulatory footing.
Canadian crypto investors have historically turned to offshore platforms for leverage and derivatives exposure due to lack of regulated domestic options. The launch represents the next phase of Coinbase's 'everything exchange' strategy, aiming to provide a single platform for users to trade spot crypto, futures, and eventually other financial instruments.
