Coinbase Brings Regulated Derivatives to Canadian Traders
Coinbase has launched derivative contracts in Canada, marking the first time Canadian traders can access regulated derivatives on a major crypto native platform.
The contracts are offered through Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM) and include perpetual and dated futures for digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, as well as commodity futures like Gold, Silver, and Oil, and index futures like the COIN50.
This move gives sophisticated investors in Canada the opportunity to trade, speculate, and hedge on a platform they already trust. Historically, Canadian traders had to rely on unregulated or offshore platforms to access crypto-derivative products.
The contracts are built to be accessible, highly capital-efficient, and transparent, with nano-sized contracts designed for lower upfront capital requirements and up to 10x leverage. For a limited time, eligible Canadian traders can take advantage of competitive launch pricing, with a flat fee of $0.11 per contract plus 0.02% per trade.
According to the Bank of Canada, one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial corporations actively use derivatives to hedge their earnings. Globally, crypto derivative trading volume is about 4.4 times the volume of crypto spot trading.
