Coinbase Brings Stablecoin Payments to Community Banks
Coinbase has formed a partnership with payments platform Moov to bring stablecoin payments infrastructure directly into community banks and credit unions.
The arrangement, which was announced on September 10, allows these institutions to offer their customers a seamless experience of using stablecoins within their existing banking channels. This is achieved through the integration of Coinbase's custodial wallet accounts and payment API with Moov's platform, which enables the banks to provide this service without having to stand up a crypto stack in-house.
The sales pitch for community institutions is clear: they get to keep the customer relationship while offering a valuable new service that can be branded as their own. However, experts warn that simply wrapping stablecoin payments in bank branding does not change the underlying legal status of these assets.
