Coinbase Builds 'AI Bank' to Empower Autonomous Transactions

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recently announced that his company is building payment infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI). The project, called Coinbase for Agents, aims to give AI models their own equivalent of a bank account, allowing them to manage money autonomously.

The idea was sparked by a post on X from Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson, who sought an 'agentic bank' where machines could be given spending limits and permission to operate independently. Armstrong responded promptly, confirming that Coinbase is indeed building the financial account for AI.

Currently, AI models like Claude or ChatGPT can be connected directly to Coinbase through a local MCP server, but they only receive isolated sub-accounts with set spending limits and maximum transaction sizes. The platform's launch followed an internal optimization campaign at Coinbase, which involved cutting around 14% of the company's workforce in early 2026 and replacing them with AI-native pods.

Armstrong is expanding the boundaries of AI autonomy every week, allowing robots to independently plan trips through AWS AgentCore and pay for hotels on Travala using USDC stablecoins. The final technical barrier was the payment mechanism, which has been addressed by the x402 protocol that moves payments to a pay-per-request model.

Armstrong's goal is to build the rails for a world where robots conduct more transactions than humans. This direction was cemented with the appointment of Anthony Armstrong to Coinbase's board of directors in early September.
