Coinbase CEO and Elon Musk Share Skepticism of Traditional Charities
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has expressed skepticism towards traditional charitable institutions, stating that some charities are 'net negative' for society.
In an interview with Katie Miller, Armstrong argued that well-intentioned initiatives can have unintended consequences, citing the example of criminal justice reform programs that 'just increased crime.'
Armstrong instead uses a donor-advised fund, which allows him to recommend how his donated assets are invested and distributed.
A donor-advised fund is different from a private foundation in that it places donated assets under the control of a sponsoring nonprofit while allowing donors to make recommendations on investments and distributions.
Armstrong's comments reflect skepticism towards permanent institutions, with him singling out the Ford Foundation and stating that its founder Henry Ford would be 'turning over in his grave' if he knew what they were up to.
