Coinbase CEO Armstrong: Charitable Foundations Are a 'Net Negative'

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has sparked outrage with his comments on charity and philanthropy. In a recent interview, he stated that he views charitable foundations as 'actually a net negative' on the world.

Armstrong's skepticism stems from concerns about the capture of ideology in these organizations, leading to unintended consequences. He cited an example where efforts to reform the criminal justice system inadvertently increased crime rates.

As a result, Armstrong has no plans to establish his own charitable foundation or rejoin the Giving Pledge, which he briefly joined in 2018 as the first crypto billionaire to do so. Instead, he uses a donor-advised fund to direct his money towards causes that align with his vision for 'helping civilization advance.'

Armstrong's comments have drawn criticism from influential individuals, including former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives Bakari Sellers, who called his views 'some of the dumbest [thing] I've ever heard.'
