Coinbase CEO Armstrong Skeptical of Charity's Impact
Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase and one of the most prominent figures in the crypto industry, has expressed his reservations about charity and philanthropy. In a recent interview, Armstrong stated that he believes charities and foundations are 'actually a net negative' for the world.
Armstrong's views on philanthropy were shaped by his experience with GiveCrypto, a nonprofit organization he founded to distribute cryptocurrency to those in need. However, he closed the organization in 2023 and quietly left the Giving Pledge in 2024.
During the interview, Armstrong explained that he thinks charities often get 'captured by ideology' and can have unintended consequences. He cited an example of a charity trying to address criminal justice reform, only to inadvertently increase crime rates.
Rather than starting his own charity or foundation, Armstrong has opted for a donor-advised fund where he can direct his donations towards causes that align with his values.
