Coinbase CEO Defies Billionaire Playbook with Donor-Advised Fund
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has chosen not to follow the traditional path of wealthy individuals by establishing a charitable foundation. Instead, he is giving back through a donor-advised fund that allows him to maintain control over his philanthropic efforts.
Armstrong's decision is a contrarian view in an industry where many founders establish foundations as a way to give back and reduce their tax burden. However, Armstrong has expressed concerns about the effectiveness of these foundations, citing the example of the Ford Foundation, which he believes has strayed from its original mission.
Armstrong's focus on direct giving is evident in his support for The Battle for Polytopia, a popular indie strategy game that has benefited from Coinbase's sponsorship. The company now provides a prize pool of around $10,000 for the annual tournament, a significant increase from the original €25 prize.
In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Armstrong remains optimistic about the future of Bitcoin, predicting it will reach between $300,000 and $400,000 by 2030. This prediction is based on his belief that legislation such as the Clarity Act will drive adoption and growth in the cryptocurrency market.
