Coinbase CEO Promotes Agentic Finance with x402 Payment Protocol Hitting 100M Transactions
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is championing 'agentic finance,' a framework where AI agents manage crypto wallets, execute transactions, and participate in commerce without human intervention.
According to Armstrong, traditional finance requires KYC verification, identity documents, and a pulse, but software has none of those things. This is the core observation behind agentic finance, which relies on AI agents' ability to operate crypto wallets.
Coinbase's x402 payment protocol has already surpassed 100 million machine-to-machine transactions in roughly nine months, with $24.24 million in 30-day transaction volumes and $1.2 million worth of transactions in May 2026 alone.
The protocol enables instant stablecoin payments between machines at the protocol level using USDC on Base, Coinbase's Layer 2 network. The x402 Foundation was established under the Linux Foundation's governance with backing from Coinbase, Cloudflare, and Stripe.
