Coinbase CEO Sees Crypto Market Turning Corner Ahead of CLARITY Act Vote
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is optimistic about the potential for a new bull market in crypto. Speaking on CNBC's 'Squawk Box' session, he noted that the current spot trading bear market has been ongoing for roughly a year and may be nearing its end.
Armstrong cited three potential catalysts that could contribute to the next bull market: the duration of the current downturn, the upcoming vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15, and Bitcoin's historically stronger performance during October, November, and December following halving cycles. He believes all these factors are converging in favor of a new upswing.
Armstrong also highlighted that Coinbase has diversified its revenue streams beyond Bitcoin spot trading, which now accounts for only about 12% of the company's income. Instead, areas like crypto derivatives, prediction markets, stablecoin payments, and real-world asset tokenization have seen growth, with the goal of offering tokenized equities in the US.
The CEO emphasized that the biggest opportunity on the horizon is 'agentic finance' or 'AI-fi,' where AI agents are expected to outnumber humans and require financial infrastructure for autonomous transactions and tasks. He sees this as a significant long-term development, particularly with SEC Chairman Paul Atkins working on an innovation exemption for trading crypto securities and tokenized stocks domestically.
