Coinbase CEO Sees Crypto Updating Entire Financial System
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes that cryptocurrency is rapidly updating the financial system. Speaking on the Katie Miller Podcast, Armstrong said that blockchain adoption across various sectors is expanding.
The CLARITY Act, a U.S. crypto legislation, is nearing a critical vote, with President Donald Trump bringing industry participants and regulators together to advance it. Armstrong expects the bill to come up for a Sep. 15 vote, which would establish clearer crypto market rules and make the regulatory framework more durable across future administrations.
Armstrong pushed back against the idea that cryptocurrency remains primarily a Bitcoin or libertarian movement, describing Bitcoin as 'digital gold.' He sees blockchain expanding across payments, lending, prediction markets, and real-world asset tokenization. For example, Armstrong said 'stocks are getting tokenized now,' with various investment funds also moving on chain.
The Coinbase CEO highlighted stablecoins such as USDC, saying 'Bitcoin is the original.' He also believes that agentic finance will be a major catalyst for blockchain adoption, predicting more AI agents than humans in the future. These agents will need to execute real-time, small-value transactions globally, creating demand for a financial infrastructure capable of handling machine-to-machine payments efficiently.
Armstrong is experimenting with AI-driven financial tools, including Coinbase Advisor, and expects agentic trading to become increasingly important. He favors a light regulatory approach to AI, warning that excessive rules could slow innovation. However, crypto requires clearer regulation because it operates within an already heavily regulated financial system.
