Coinbase CEO Unveils Agentic Finance Vision Combining AI and Crypto

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has outlined his vision for Agentic Finance, which combines artificial intelligence with cryptocurrency payment infrastructure. He argues that AI and crypto can support each other across online financial systems, rather than being mutually exclusive.

Armstrong says that AI agents need programmable money to operate autonomously, as traditional banking systems cannot serve them directly. He believes that real-time cryptocurrency payments can provide the necessary foundation for these activities.

Coinbase has already supported this approach through its Base USDC and x402 protocol, which power most agentic payments. The company launched Coinbase for Agents in June 2023 to give developers financial tools for autonomous systems.

Armstrong expects AI agents to trade, provide financial advice, and manage investment portfolios, among other tasks. He also sees potential for them to raise or borrow money for projects they undertake.
