Coinbase CEO Warns Rogue AI May Wreak Havoc in Next Year or Two

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has warned that AI models may go rogue within the next year or two, sparking widespread panic and potentially significant losses for digital assets. He compared this hypothetical event to the Morris Worm of 1988, which infected nearly 10% of all machines connected to ARPANET.

The Morris Worm was created by Robert Tappan Morris, a Cornell graduate student who brought a significant portion of the early internet to its knees. Armstrong believes that a rogue AI model would generate 'big deal' headlines, but ultimately be a 'blip on the radar' in the grand sweep of technological history.

He sees AI and crypto as complementary technologies, with AI representing programmable intelligence and crypto representing programmable money. Coinbase has been aggressively integrating AI tools across its operations, including mandatory use of coding assistants for employees.
