Coinbase Co-Founder Fred Ehrsam Takes on Venezuela Oil Venture
Bitcoin and cryptocurrency news writer Zen has published an exclusive report on Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam's recent venture into Venezuela's oil industry. The 38-year-old billionaire has been frequently seen in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, where he has lived long-term in a local hotel.
Ehrsam co-founded Primavera Infinita, which officially signed a production participation contract with PDVSA, the state-owned oil company of Venezuela, securing development opportunities for the Budare-Elotes block oil field. The deal is expected to contribute over 70,000 barrels per day of new production.
This move may seem surprising given Ehrsam's background in cryptocurrency and software investment, but according to Zen, it's not just about oil resources. Venezuela holds one of the world's largest proven oil reserves, but long-term sanctions, underinvestment, aging equipment, and political and property rights risks have hindered production.
The situation began to change in 2026 when the Trump administration restructured its relationship with Venezuela, pushing for reforms in petroleum laws and contract frameworks. This has created a new market dynamic, where private capital can enter through a production participation model, offering higher returns than mature markets.
