Coinbase Cuts 14% of Workforce Amid Market Downturn and AI-Driven Business Overhaul
Coinbase is undergoing significant changes as it seeks to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of cryptocurrency and AI.
In an email to employees, CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the company will be reducing its size by approximately 14% in order to become leaner, faster, and more efficient for future growth.
The decision is driven by two main factors: the current market downturn and the impact of AI on business operations. Armstrong notes that while Coinbase has managed through cyclicality before, it needs to adjust its cost structure now to emerge from this period stronger. He also highlights the accelerating pace of technological advancements, particularly with AI, which is changing how companies operate.
The changes will involve a fundamental shift in how Coinbase operates, including flattening the org structure to five layers or less below the CEO and COO, eliminating pure managers, and introducing AI-native pods. Armstrong emphasizes that this new approach will require leaders to be strong individual contributors as well as managers.
