Coinbase Debuts Tokenized Stocks on Base Blockchain
Coinbase has made its tokenized stocks available on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain launched by Coinbase. The digital assets are tied to real ownership of shares held by a custodian and do not represent synthetic products or wrappers.
The tokenized shares, which include Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet/Google among others, are now accessible through Base's B20 standard. According to Coinbase, these are 'real ownership' rather than a workaround, as each digital asset represents 1-to-1 shares held by a custodian.
Base's mainnet went live on August 9, 2023, providing a secure and economical platform for digital assets, including securities. Users can lend, borrow, or use these securities as collateral across the Base DeFi ecosystem.
