Coinbase Ditches Ambitious Crypto App Rebrand: Back to Basics for Wallet

Coinbase has abandoned its ambitious plan to transform Coinbase Wallet into an 'everything crypto app' called Base. The company is reverting back to the original Coinbase Wallet name, refocusing the product on trading and self-custody.

The experiment, which began over a year ago, aimed to make Coinbase Wallet a consumer gateway to the entire Base ecosystem. However, it appears that users struggled to understand the app's purpose, with its multiple features making it harder to explain.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong admitted in March 2026 that the social experiment 'didn't quite work,' and the company had already begun shifting the app toward trading.
