Coinbase Ditches 'Base App' Name, Returns to Coinbase Wallet Identity
Coinbase has officially ended its experiment to rebrand its self-custodial wallet as the 'Base App', reverting back to its original name, Coinbase Wallet. The decision comes roughly a year after the company announced the rebranding at its 'A New Day One' event in July 2025.
The Base App was an ambitious project that aimed to create an 'everything app' for crypto, combining trading, USDC-powered payments, social interactions through the Farcaster protocol, and a mini-app ecosystem into a single product. While the technical infrastructure was impressive, with Flashblocks on the Base Layer 2 network slashing block times to just 200 milliseconds, the social features failed to resonate with users.
Lead Jesse Pollak acknowledged in January 2026 that the social strategy wasn't working and announced a pivot to a 'trading-first' user experience. This was followed by a leadership shake-up in July 2026 when Pollak stepped back from day-to-day leadership, handing over the role to Jordan Fish, also known as Cobie.
The rebranding signals a strategic retreat from the idea that a crypto wallet should be a social platform and a recommitment to its identity as a self-custodial complement to the Coinbase exchange. The move is seen as a recognition of which parts of the app users were actually using and doubling down on those.
