Coinbase Dominates AI Payments with Agentic Wallets
The financial system has traditionally been built for people, not software. However, with the rise of AI agents, there is a growing need for quick and secure crypto payments between machines.
Coinbase Agentic Wallets are leading the way in this space by providing a non-custodial wallet specifically designed for AI agents, which plugs into models like Claude, Codex, and Gemini. This allows agents to make payments on their own without human approval.
The x402 protocol is used to facilitate these transactions, which works as an AI crypto payment API that sends a '402 Payment Required' response when an agent calls a paid service. The wallet then settles the transaction instantly in USDC on Base, with no invoices required and no human participation needed.
Coinbase launched its AI blockchain wallet infrastructure in February 2026, which has already seen significant traction with over 165 million transactions processed by x402 and $50 million in cumulative settled volume. The exchange owns the entire stack, including the wallet, payment protocol (x402), and settlement chain (Base), giving it a strong advantage over its competitors.
