Coinbase Drops Out of BVNK Bidding Process as Mastercard Emerges as Buyer
The stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK has been acquired by Mastercard for $18 billion, according to recent reports. However, the path to this acquisition was not a straightforward one.
Concentric, an early investor in BVNK, revealed that Coinbase had initially taken the lead in the bidding process with a reported offer of $25 billion, but ultimately dropped out due to strategic and cultural mismatch issues.
Kjartan Rist, co-founder of Concentric, stated that when choosing a buyer, the BVNK team prioritized long-term partnerships and cultural compatibility over mere price. While Coinbase's higher bid was a consideration, it was not enough to overcome the 'chemistry' issue between the two companies.
Mastercard, on the other hand, had been involved in discussions with BVNK since early on and eventually reasserted itself as the primary buyer after Coinbase withdrew from the bidding process. Visa also participated in the competition but ultimately chose an open strategy of collaborating with multiple stablecoin companies rather than making a direct acquisition.
BVNk was founded in 2018, providing enterprises with infrastructure for stablecoin payments, cross-border settlements, and fund management. Concentric's investment in BVNK in 2019 valued it at $4 million, marking a significant return on their investment given the recent sale price of $18 billion.
