Coinbase Edges Closer to AI-Focused Financial Account

Coinbase is building an AI financial account for autonomous software agents, CEO Brian Armstrong announced on Sept. 9.

This infrastructure already exists in an early form through Coinbase's 'Coinbase for Agents' feature, which allows AI applications to trade more than 900 cryptocurrency pairs, eligible U.S. futures and S&P 500 equities through isolated, permission-limited portfolios.

The x402 payment protocol, also built by Coinbase, enables agents to pay for digital services directly within an HTTP request, with over 100 million payments processed on the platform so far.
