Coinbase Enables Autonomous Payments with x402 Protocol
Coinbase has rolled out a new feature that allows corporate customers to accept payments directly from AI agents, marking a significant shift in the way autonomous transactions are processed.
The move uses Coinbase's x402 protocol, an open standard developed and incubated by the exchange, which authenticates and settles payments on-chain without human intervention.
This capability addresses a growing need as more Web3 applications begin executing tasks on behalf of users, and AI agents can now initiate financial transactions autonomously.
The x402 protocol creates a genuine payment flow, reducing per-transaction costs, removing manual settlement delays, and providing an audit trail for compliance, accounting, and tax purposes.
