Coinbase Enters Token-Backed Mortgage Market with Better Home & Finance Partnership
Coinbase Global (COIN) has entered the token-backed mortgage market through its partnership with Better Home & Finance Holding Company. In August 2026, Better announced the general availability of its token-backed conforming mortgage product powered by Coinbase, which is eligible for a lender-funded rebate of 1% of the mortgage value (capped at US$10,000) across standard mortgages, HELOCs, and refinances.
The launch under Fannie Mae guidelines highlights how Coinbase is extending its crypto infrastructure into traditional housing finance. According to early waitlist indications, over US$260 million in projected loan volume is expected from this rollout. This development reinforces the tokenization and off-exchange use cases as a key near-term catalyst for Coinbase.
However, investors should still pay close attention to the cybersecurity cost overhang and the risk that Coinbase's narrative may not directly solve the immediate pressure from weaker trading volumes and ongoing cybersecurity costs, which remain central risks to earnings. The company's new authorization to build a tokenization hub in Abu Dhabi connects directly to the same thesis as the Better partnership.
